Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel

A long long time ago in a tiny house at the edge of the forest lived Hansel and his little sister Gretel. Their father was a poor woodcutter who loved them very much, but their stepmother was very cruel.

Finally one night the stepmother told her husband that the children were a burden to them. So she forced her husband to take the children into the forest. The woodcutter was unhappy but with a heavy heart he agreed.

The next morning, the family set off into the forest. The woodcutter gave his children some bread. Late in the afternoon their father built a fire and the children sat down to eat and rest. When they were asleep the woodcutter and his wife quietly slipped away.

The next morning as soon as it was daylight, they started exploring the forest looking out for help. Suddenly they came upon a clearing in the forest. Raised a little above the ground was a fabulous tiny cottage. It was made of cake and had chocolate doors and windows, with an icing roof and lollipops coming out of the chimney. They rushed to the cottage.

Suddenly appeared an old woman and kindly invited the children inside. After giving them a hearty supper, the old witch put the children to sleep. In the middle of the night the nasty witch quietly crept into the bedroom and carried the tired Hansel out of the house and locked him in a cage.Poor little Gretel was forced to do all housework.

In the afternoon the witch instructed Gretel to fill the big kettle with water and boil it. Suddenly Gretel got brilliant idea. She fooled the witch by saying that she could no see if the water had boiled properly as she was too short. The greedy witch was so anxious to eat Hansel. So, without thinking she stepped towards the boiling pot, and leaned forward peeping in.

Moving quickly Gretel gave the witch a hard push right into the boiling pot. Splash! The wicked witch landed right inside the middle of her own boiling pot, and what the end of her!

Gretel quickly scampered across the garden and unlocked Hansel. The children danced with joy. They were now free from the witch. They quickly entered the cottage and to their good luck, found a trunk filled with shiny gold coins and beautiful jewels.
